Review: The Professional by Kresley Cole

The Blurb:

He makes the rules...

Mafiya enforcer Aleksei “The Siberian” Sevastyan’s loyalty to his boss knows no bounds, until he meets the boss’s long-lost daughter, a curvy, feisty redhead who haunts his mind and heats his blood like no other. Ordered to protect her, Aleksei will do anything to possess her as well—on his own wicked terms.

Rules are made to be broken…

Grad student Natalie Porter had barely recovered from her first sight of the dark and breathtaking Sevastyan before the professional enforcer whisks her away to Russia, thrusting her into a world of extreme wealth and wanton pleasures. Every day under his protection leads her deeper under his masterful spell.

Are you ready to play?

Yet all is not as it seems. To remove Natalie from an enemy’s reach, Sevastyan spirits her into hiding. From an opulent palace in Russia to the decadent playgrounds of the mega-wealthy in Paris, the two lovers will discover that even their darkest—and most forbidden—fantasies can come true...

When I first started this one, I'd never heard of Kresley Cole. I freely admit that I devoured the entire Game Maker series in 4 days. Will be promptly downloading the Immortals After Dark series next (and there are so many of them…yessss).

The book starts out introducing Natalie in fairly a quick but sensible fashion. I really liked how the story jumps right into the action. No long backstory, just bam! Sexy Russian. And okay, I’m just going to say it—was anyone else reading this book and thinking these characters sounded…a bit familiar?

This is by no means a complaint. If I’m wrong, I will still refuse to acknowledge reality, because I was tickled at the coincidence here and I’m a bit of a Marvel MCU nerd. #WinterWidow

So she meets sexy Russian who is totally not Bucky Barnes. Within just a few pages…whoa.

Also by no means a complaint. I won’t go into spoilers, but this book has it all. The thrill of the chase, intrigue, and just the right amount of alpha male without making you want to punch him in the balls. Cole treads that fine line very well, emphasizing the sexy dominance aspects without making it overbearing a la Christian Grey. Natalie is submissive in the bedroom (while still owning and embracing her sexuality), but maintains her own autonomy outside of that. I like that a lot. It’s hard to find a good alpha male story that doesn’t come paired with a weak-willed protagonist that becomes submissive in all things, all the time.

All the stars!
